"Aareböötle" is one of the most popular activities Bern has to offer. Hardly any other river is more frequently navigated by rubber dinghies than the Aare between Thun and Lake Wohlensee. The casual river pirate plunges into the water in summer. For our Aargonauts, who have to circumnavigate the cliffs of their doctorate, it‘s a year-round mission, full of perils on the way. Pursuing a doctorate is for experienced navigators only and done at one‘s own risk: Like their Greek counterparts, our Aargonauts venture down the river in icy temperatures in winter, brave the overflowing meltwater in spring and bypass dried-up riverbeds in midsummer. Treacherous dams of vicious beavers await, as do tricky sills and dangerous whirlpools. Siren song tempts untimely stopovers, and at any time, a ruthless harpy may leap off a bridge and capsize the boat. Still, with a little luck and help from the godexes, the golden fleece–the PhD–awaits at the end. Venture with us on the green water!
