Publishing in academic journals and editing your own volume have become become essential milestones in an academic career. But where to start? The process involves multiple stages and considerations and is different to writing articles for internet platforms and other media, for example.

The workshop “Writing and Editing for Publication in the Humanities” aims to unpack different publishing possibilities and to shed light on experiences and potential pitfalls in a lengthy process of selecting and/or writing proposals, collating abstracts, draft writing, and reviewing and editing during the peer-review process.

Drawing on our own experiences as PhD students, authors, editors, and copy-editors for a variety of platforms, academic and otherwise, this workshop provides a space to share insights, get advice, and ask questions about the publishing journey. Whether you are just starting out with your PhD and new to the world of publishing, or you’ve already had your work published, this workshop is an opportunity to share experiences, including common pitfalls, and to collaboratively address any practical questions you may have regarding writing, editing and publishing–individually or collectively.

Under the umbrella of the SNFS-project “Hip-Hop as a Transcultural Phenomenon,” James Barber and Dianne Violeta Mausfeld co-edited the volume Remixing the Hip-Hop Narrative: Between Local Expressions and Global Connections (2024, transcript)
